A Pair of NYU Fencers Earn All-America Honors

Two members of the New York University fencing team have earned All-America honors at the NCAA Championships, which are being held at the Indiana Farmers Coliseum in Indianapolis, IN, from Thursday, March 23, through Sunday, March 26.

Members of NYU's men's team are competing on Thursday and Friday, while the women will fence on Saturday and Sunday.

Sophomore Grant Williams and junior Philip Shin each finished among the top 12 in their respective weapons, thus earning All-America honors.

"This was our best team outing in a long time," said NYU Head Coach Steve Mormando. "We will most likely end up as the top Division III school again and ahead of a great majority of Division I teams, as well."

Williams, competing in sabre, finished in sixth place after posting an overall 15-8 record. Shin, who was competing in foil, went 12-11 in his 23 bouts and placed 12th to also secure All-America honors.

The duo are just two of five members of the men's fencing team representing NYU at the Championships.

Freshman Sean Grant finished in 18th place in foil with 10 wins. Senior captain Quinten Burgunder (six wins, sabre) and junior Hans Engel (four wins, epee) each finished 24th in their respective weapons.

"Sean did well to finish a terrific freshman season," added Mormando. "Quinten is one of our most improved fencers and Hans did a great job, but narrowly lost a few bouts in an extremely contentious epee field."

Each bout victory recorded is worth one point for the team. The Violets totaled 47 points and are currently in 11th place overall. Penn State University is just ahead of NYU with 48 points.

The University of Notre Dame and Ohio State University are currently tied for first place with 86 points.
