Brandeis Men Take Second Consecutive Northeast Fencing Conference Crown

The Brandeis University men's fencing team won its second-straight Northeast Fencing Conference title with an unbeaten record today, as the Judges went 6-0 at Boston College today to finish the NFC campaign with a 10-0 record. The Brandeis women went 4-2 today to finish the NFC schedule with a 9-3 record, which puts them in third place in the standings. The Judges finish their NFC schedule tied with Boston College in the overall standings with a 19-3 record.

The NFC title is the third in four years for the Brandeis men, while the combined crown would be the team's second in three years.

In today's action, the Brandeis men won their first two matches by narrow scores. They defeated Brown and host Boston College, 15-12, in each match. Against Brown, all three weapons were decided by 6-3 scores, with foil and epee picking up wins for the Judges to offset the defeat by the epee squad. Against BC, both teams entered the match with a 6-0 overall NFC record. Brandeis took down the home team with a 5-4 win in foil and a 6-3 victory in epee, with BC earning a 5-4 saber win. The Judges rolled to wins in their final four matches, defeating Vassar (23-4), Dartmouth (22-5), Tufts (21-6) and the University of Florida (23-4). The last three matches were all against club squads.

Individually, men's foil was the standout squad, going 6-0 on the day, as the only squad to defeat both BC (6-3) and Brown (5-4). The squad lost just one other bout in the remaining four matches combined. Senior Elishua Litle (Haifa, Israel / Reali - Beit Beram) and sophomore Ian Quin (Ramsey, N.J. / Ramsey)led the squad with seven wins each against the Judges' three varsity foes, going 7-1 and 7-2, respectively. Rookie Alex Broszkowski (Haworth,N.J. / Northern Valley Regional) was 7-0 against club opponents, while rookie Tristan Barca-Hall (Monterey,CA / Scotts Valley) and sophomores Sam Chestna(Middleboro, Mass. / Homeschooled) and Trevor Filseth (Palo Alto, CA / Palo Alto) each went 6-0 against mostly club foes.

The men's epee squad posted a 4-2 record, with senior Hunter Stusnick (New Vernon, N.J. / Chatham) leading the way with an 8-3 record, tied for the most wins on the team for the day. Men's saber also went 4-2, with their two defeats coming by 5-4 scores and three wins by 9-0 margins. Senior Kyle Berney(Shreveport, La./Caddo Magnet) matched Stusnick's win total, also going 8-3, while rookie Garrett Tordo (Framingham, Mass. / Framingham) went 6-0 on the day.
