NYU Fencing Duo Shines at National Championships

Quinten Burgunder and Kyle Welch of the New York University men's fencing team earned gold medals at the USA Fencing National Championships, which were held in Salt Lake City, UT, from Saturday, July 1, to Monday, July 10.

Burgunder captured the gold with five wins in the second round in the Division I-A sabre class tournament on Sunday, July 2, despite being seeded in the 88th spot. In the Division I saber class tournament on Saturday, July 1, the recent NYU Stern graduate placed 22nd.

Welch claimed first place in the Division I-A foil class tournament by tallying four victories on Saturday., July 1 The rising junior finished in 72nd place in the Division I foil class tournament on Sunday, July 2.

Both fencers were significant contributors to NYU's successful 2016-17 season as the Violets finished 18-8 in dual matches and took 11th place overall at the NCAA National Championships in March.
