NYU Men Complete First Day at NCAA Championships

The New York University men's fencing team competed at the NCAA Fencing Championships on Thursday, March 21. The event runs from Thursday-Sunday, March 21-24, at Cleveland State University's Wolstein Center in Cleveland, OH.

The men compete from Thursday-Friday and the women on Saturday and Sunday. The points from each of the four days are added up to determine a combined winner. 

Winning eight of his 15 bouts, Mickey Bak is currently 11th in saber out of the 24 total competitors. 

Kyle Welch who has won six of 15 is in 17th place in foil, while Zohaib Mannan is 22nd in the same competition. 

The Violets, one of only two NCAA Division III teams, are in 12th place out of 22 teams with 18 points. They are only one point behind 11th-place Stanford University. Columbia University/Barnard College lead with 61 points.

"We had a slow start, but picked up steam towards the end of the day," said Head Coach Steve Mormando. "The team is looking forward to getting back out there tomorrow."
