The New York University men's fencing team went to Philadelphia, PA, on Sunday, October 28, to participate in the Temple Open.

In the Violets' first meet of the season, the squad produced two top-10 finishers.

In epee, sophomore Sam Bekker finished eighth. He won five of eight first- and second-round bouts to advance to direct elimination. He then defeated three opponents before being eliminated in the Round of 8.

Freshman Jameson Lu, in his first collegiate competition, lost all four of his epee bouts in round one but won all five of his consolation bouts to take first place in that bracket.

In foil, the Violets had a terrific showing with sophomore Zohaib Mannan taking ninth and Owen Cozine, Daniel Mejia-Ruiz, Kyle Welch, and Eric Zobel finishing 11th, 13th, 14th, and 15th, respectively. Mannan only lost one of his first- and second-round bouts and made it to the Round of 16 in direct elimination before being knocked out by a tough opponent from Cornell University.

"This was a great start to the season, especially for the freshman," said Head Coach Steve Mormando. "Even though we had some tough competition with top fencers from Penn State, Columbia, New Jersey Institute of Technology, and the University of North Carolina, I was pleased with the results."
