Three Top-8 Finishes Pace NYU at NCAA Regional

The New York University men's fencing team competed in the NCAA Regional Championship in Ithaca, NY, on Sunday, March 8. The event was hosted by Cornell University.

Sam Bekker (Brooklyn, NY/Midwood) had the Violets' best finish, taking fifth place out of 50 competitors in epee, the largest field of the day. Also in epee Liam Carpenter (Bedford, MA/St. John's Prep) finished in eighth and Ian Sanders (Wilton, CT/Wilton) in 15th.

Brian Kim (Upper Saddle River, NJ/Dwight-Englewood) and Darren Yen (Chatham, NJ/Chatham) finished sixth and 11th respectively in sabre.

"It was a really great weekend," said Head Coach Steve Mormando. "Everyone performed excellently and we are looking forward to next week."

In foil Zohaib Mannan (Short Hills, NJ/Millburn) placed eighth, while Owen McKenna (New Hope, PA /Germantown Academy) took 17th.

A maximum of six fencers from each school are able to qualify for the NCAA Championships, which will be held on Thursday-Sunday, March 19-22, in Detroit, MI.
