On Saturday, February 1, the New York University men's fencing team competed in the Eric Sollee Invitational, hosted by Brandeis University, in Waltham, MA.
The Violets went a perfect 6-0, defeating Haverford College (22-5), Brandeis (16-11), Boston College (20-7), Brown University (18-9), the University of Pennsylvania (14-13)), and the Massachusetts Institute of Technology (MIT) (14-13).
Grant Williams (Atlanta, GA/The Galloway School) led the sabre team, winning 15 bouts and losing only three. He went 3-0 against Brown, Brandeis and MIT. Jamie Ren (Hong Kong, Hong Kong/The Lawrenceville School (Lawrenceville, NJ)) and Darren Yen (Chatham, NJ/Chatham) compiled eight wins each in the weapon.
Ian Sanders (Wilton, CT/Wilton) was second on NYU in wins on the day, totaling an epee record of 14-2. Ian Adler (Malvern, PA/Great Valley) and Liam Carpenter (Bedford, MA/St. John's Prep) both recorded eight wins in the weapon.
In Foil, Owen McKenna (New Hope, PA /Germantown Academy) led the squad with nine victories.
"It was a great day for our team, including a big win against a top-10 program like U. Penn, a team we had lost to earlier this season," said Head Coach Steve Mormando. "So many great performances individually, as well."
