The Emory men's golf team posted a seventh-place finish
out of 15 teams at its Spring Invitational. The tournament
was held at 6,860, par-72 Druid Hills Golf Club in Atlanta.
With the tourney shortened to 18 holes following the cancellation
of Monday's opening round, Emory finished with a team score of
302. Taking home the top spot was No. 7-ranked Methodist with
a mark of three-over par 291. No. 3 Oglethorpe and No. 4
Guilford tied for runner-up honors at 295 while No. 10 LaGrange was
fourth at 296. St. Thomas of Minnesota rounded out the top
five with a score of 298.
Senior Johnathan Chen and Jeff Wells of
Methodist ended up battling in a playoff after tying for the top
spot in the 82-player field with each player shooting three-under
69. After shooting a one over-par 37 on the front nine, Chen
regrouped and carded a four-under 32 on the back nine. After
each player posted a par on the first playoff hole, the pair
advanced to the 18th hole where Chen emerged with
the victory after dropping in an approximate 40-foot birdie
putt. It represented the second time in his career
(2011) that he had captured medalist honors at the Spring
Invitational.
Freshman Colby Hipp turned in a strong effort with a
one-over par 73, good for 10th place while
junior Alex Wunderlich finished at 79.
Senior Alec Berens rounded out the team's scoring with an
81. Also competing for the side was Will Roth who
totaled an 82.
Sophomore Jack Williams, competing as an individual, placed
fifth on the leader board with a one-under performance of 71.
The Emory 'B' side was paced by sophomore Vince
Sirianni who carded a 73.
