New York University's men's golf team finished in fifth place
out of 18 teams at the McDaniel Invitational, which was held at the
Bridges Golf Club in Abbottstown, PA, on Saturday, March 29. The
Violets shot a 320 overall, leaving them 15 strokes behind the
leader St. John Fisher College. Round Two play scheduled for
Sunday, March 30, was cancelled due to inclement weather.
NYU was led by freshman Owen Lin, who shot a 4-over
76, tying him for fourth place and was just three strokes behind
the leader Nick Palladino (73) from the University of
Rochester.
HIGHLIGHTS:
- Junior Matthew Gjonaj tied for 13th place
after shooting a 7-over 79.
- Senior captain Tim Lau shot a 9-over 81,
putting him in a tie for 24th place.
"I really think we played better than the score indicates. The
conditions were really awful. As a team, we really just weren't
able to make short putts," said Head Coach Todd
Kolean. "We played very well. Owen is from California, so it
is really the first time he has had to play in these conditions.
St. John Fisher is #4 in the country and University of Rochester is
in the top 15. So, for him to step up and compete like that was
really great.
"We are disappointed not to be able to play today (Sunday). We were
on the bus, geared up and ready, but the course was pretty much
under water," said Kolean. "We really felt that we could make up a
few strokes. Mother Nature just didn't cooperate. It was still a
good showing."
