New York University's men's golf team finished in fourth place
at the University Athletic Association (UAA) Championship, which
was held on Sunday and Monday, March 9-10, at the Red Tail Country
Club in Orlando, FL.
NYU improved on its first-round score of 308 by one stroke,
shooting a 307 on Monday. The Violets finished at 615 overall, 20
strokes behind third-place Carnegie Mellon University (595). Emory
University won the tournament with a total of 582, nine strokes
ahead of the University of Rochester (591).
The Violets were led by junior Matthew Gjonaj, who
finished tied for 10th place. He shot a
day-one 74 and a 77 on day two, finishing with a total of 151.
All players who finished among the top-five were named First Team
All-UAA. Gjonaj, along with the next five finishers (places 6-10)
were named Second Team All-UAA.
"I'm very pround of Matt," said NYU Head Coach Todd
Kolean. "It was a really good tournament for him and hopefuly
it sets him up for the rest of the year."
HIGHLIGHTS:
- Freshman Owen Lin shot a 75 on Sunday and a
77 on Monday (152 overall). He finished tied for 12th place.
"Owen played really well and was just one stroke out from All-UAA,
so I'm very proud of him," said Kolean.
- Senior co-captain Tim Lau rose three places
on day two after improving nine strokes on his score from Sunday.
He finished in 20th place after shooting 157 overall (83-74).
- Senior co-captain Kyle Demshki tied for 17th
place after shooting 76-79 (155 total).
"The course was very playable today, and any time you have all
five players shoot in the 70's, its a good day," said Kolean.
"Unfortunately, it was highly competitive today and the other teams
really tore it up, as well. We were a liitle behind after
yesterday, so we were forced to take a few more risks then maybe we
would have liked."
