Rochester Moving Up After Third Round at Nationals

Rochester Moving Up After Third Round at Nationals

From University of Rochester Athletics

The University of Rochester was one of three full teams to complete its third round on Thursday at a rain-soaked NCAA Division III Championships at the Grandover Resort.

Rochester had another strong day, carding a +11 score of 299, moving up from 15th to 12th place after the completed third round with many of the teams ahead of them still out on the course.  UR, with its second straight round below 300 as a team, sits just six shots behind 7th place.

Leading UR is senior Nick Palladino who carded an even-par 72 on Thursday, moving up into a tie for 10th place individually.  He had a solid day with just two birdies and two bogeys on his card and sits with a score of 218 through three days.

Senior Will Mallia also played well in the soft conditions in the third round, firing four birdies en route to a 1-over score of 73.  He sits in a tie for 31st after previous rounds of 73 and 77 for a three day score of 223.

Sophomore G.W. VanderZwaag seems to have found a groove on the Grandover course after a rough first round, shooting his second straight score below 80, carding a 76 (+4) in Thursday's round.  Classmate Dominick Schumacher was UR's fourth counting score on the day, shooting a 78 (+6).  Schumacher is in a tie for 49th individually.

Matt van Niekerk was UR's 5th golfer, shooting an 82 on Thursday.  Overall as a team, UR, who started on the back nine (holes 10-18), played very well on its inward nine (holes 1-9) with a combined eight birdies.  That compares to just two for the first nine holes played on the day.

Heavy rains delayed play for nearly four hours in the middle of the round on the Grandover East Course.  After play resumed, UR was able to complete its third round before rains came again, forcing the remains of round three to be completed in the morning.
