Three From Rochester Earn Golf All-Region Honors

From University of Rochester Athletics

The Golf Coaches Association of America released its NCAA Division III PING All-Region teams and the University of Rochester had three members make the 15-golfer Northeast Region squad.

Junior co-captains Dominick Schumacher and G.W. VanderZwaag were selected along with sophomore Jona Scott.

The Yellowjackets recently completed the 2014-15 season, a year in which UR captured its 11th UAA Tournament title in March while also earning a victory in the Liberty League Fall Qualifier, earning the right to host the spring conference championships.  In the Liberty League Fall victory, the Yellowjackets set a new school record for a single round, carding a final round 280 (-8).  Rochester also had three other 3rd place finishes on the year, finishing 3rd at the St. John Fisher Invitational, the Duke Nelson Invitational and the Liberty League Spring Championship.

Schumacher was one of Rochester's top golfers all season long, finishing the year with a team best scoring average of 75.86 in 22 rounds.  He played in 10 events, finishing in the top-10 six times and earning a top-5 place in two of those.  His best tournament came at the UAA Championship where he tied for first after regulation, eventually finishing in 2nd place after a playoff with a CMU golfer.  Schumacher also earned 1st Team All-Liberty League honors by virtue of his 5th place finish at the Liberty League Spring Championship.  The junior carded his season best round of 69 (-3) in the final round of the Tournament Town Championship preview in September.

Scott was one of three Yellowjacket golfers to appear in all 10 events in 2014-15.  The sophomore was 3rd on the team with a 76.82 scoring average for his 22 rounds.  He finished in the top-10 three times, each time earning top-5 finish as well, leading the team in that category.  Scott carded a career best round of 69 (-3) at the Liberty League Fall Qualifier in helping UR set a single round scoring record.  He placed in a tie for 2nd at that tournament, his best result of the year.  He also finished tied for 5th at the UAA Championship, earning 1st Team All-UAA honors.  For the season, Scott defeated over 70% of hit opponents.

VanderZwaag had a fabulous spring for Rochester and finished the season with a scoring average of 77.88, good for 5th on the team.  The junior played in eight events, finishing in the top-10 three times, including earning 2nd Team All-Liberty League honors with a t-6th place finish at the Liberty League Spring Championship.  He also finished t-9th at the Liberty League Fall Qualifier after shooting a season best round of 70 (-2) in the final round and earned the same result (t-9th) at the Manhattanville/NYU Spring Invitational in April.  VanderZwaag was one of two golfers on Rochester to have multiple under par rounds this season.

The Northeast regional team had a very Liberty League feel on the 15-person team as nine came from Liberty League schools.  Rochester and Rensselaer each had three selected while league champion Skidmore had two and St. Lawrence had one selection.
