Yellowjackets Hang With the Best, End 6th In Opener

The University of Rochester golf team started off the 2015-16 season showing it can hang with some of the best NCAA Division III teams in the country.
 
The Yellowjackets completed play at the NCAA Flower City Preview at Midvale CC in Penfield in a tie for sixth place in the 36-hole event.  UR totaled 616 strokes (+40) to tie with Trinity University (TX), Illinois Wesleyan University and Greensboro College.  Both Illinois Wesleyan (7th) and Trinity (19th) were ranked ahead of Rochester in the preseason Division III coaches poll.
 
Overall the tournament featured nine of the top-25 teams and eight other teams receiving votes in the poll, including Rochester.
 
Tournament host St. John Fisher College took the team title with a two day score of 604.  Top-ranked Methodist University was 2nd with 608.  #22 Huntingdon was 3rd at 611 while #4 Wittenberg and receiving votes Mary Hardin-Baylor with tied for 4th with 614 scores.
 
Leading Rochester in the tournament was sophomore Jason Paek who ended the tournament in a tie for 5th place after shooting a two day score of 149 (+5).  On Sunday, he shot a +3 round of 75 on the par-72 layout.  The sophomore carded two birdies and five bogeys in his round.
 
The +3 score was matched by junior teammate Daniel Luftspring who ended the tournament t-20th after a two day score of 153 (+9).  After going out in 4-over par, Luftspring finished his round strong with four birdies to finish 1-under on the inward nine to shoot his 75 on Sunday.
 
Junior Garrett Sweeney carded a 77 (+5) on Sunday and improved 14 positions on the individual leaderboard to finish in 56th place with a 160 score over two days.  Classmate Jona Scott was +7 on Sunday and ended in a tie for 27th after a 154 total score.
 
Dominick Schumacher was the final Rochester golfer also carding a +7 round of 79 in the second round.
 
The individual winner of the tournament was St. John Fisher's Corey Haas who shot a combined score of 145 (+1) over the two days.  He won by one stroke over Mats Heien of Mary Hardin-Baylor, two strokes over Brandon Rougeau of Tyler-Texas and by three over Addison Lambeth of Huntingdon.
