Rochester Battles Tough Conditions At Hershey Cup

High winds and lightning fast greens allowed for scores during round one of the Hershey Cup tournament to be higher than average at Hershey Country Club on Sunday.
 
The University of Rochester golf team battled through the 25-30 mph consistent winds that featured gusts of 40+ mph to finish the opening round in a tie for 5th place of 15 teams with a score of +45 (329).

UAA rival Carnegie Mellon University leads the field after an opening round of 309 (+25) on Sunday.  Allegheny College is 2nd with 320, York College of Pennsylvania 3rd with 321 while St. John Fisher sits 4th after an opening round 326.  Rochester is tied with Washington & Jefferson for 5th.
 
UR's top scorer in the opening round was sophomore Luis Arteaga who ended with a Sunday round of 78 (+7) on the par-71, 6551 yard East Course at Hershey CC.  Arteaga sits in 8th place after the opening round.
 
Junior Jona Scott and sophomore Jason Paek each carded opening round 81's (+1) to rank in a tie for 22nd place in the individual standings.  Scott's round featured three birdies of UR's six birdies as a team, to tie for most in the opening round.  Paek opened with a rough back nine (started on #10), but settled down on his inward nine holes with seven pars to complete his opening round.
 
Two UR individuals stood out in the tough day one conditions and sit in the top-10 in the player standings.  Junior Garrett Sweeney is tied for 4th after an opening round 76 (+5).  Sweeney posted three birdies on his round.  Senior Dominick Schumacher carded a 77 (+6) on Sunday and sits in a tie for 6th place, five strokes back of 1st round leader Bradley Jennette of CMU.
 
Rounding out Rochester's team scoring was junior Daniel Luftspring who carded an 89 on Sunday.  Senior G.W. VanderZwaag was the Yellowjackets fifth golfer in the lineup and shot a 92.  Rochester also had two other individuals competing in the tournament with Scott Chudacoff firing an 85 while Corey Mitchener shot an opening round 86.
 
Tee times begin at 8:09 am on Monday morning for the final round.  Rochester will go off as a team from the 1st tee beginning at 8:54 am.
