Season-Best 290 Puts Yellowjackets In 6th Place At Jekyll Island

The University of Rochester golf team shot a season best round of 290 in the first round of the Jekyll Island Invitational on Friday.
 
UR (+2) sits in a tie for 6th after day one of the 30-team tournament which features 20 of those teams being ranked in the top-25 or receiving votes in the latest Division III poll.
 
The 290 score also puts the Yellowjackets just five strokes behind 1st round leader Illinois Wesleyan (285; -3) who is ranked #12 in Division III.  #16 LaGrange College is 2nd at 286 (-2) while Christopher Newport is 3rd with an opening round 287 (-1).

Rochester was led by junior Jona Scott who carded an opening round 71 (-1).  Scott had one rough hole on his day, but rebounded with four birdies and the rest pars for his second career under par round.
 
Junior Daniel Luftspring shot -2 on his back nine (holes 1-9) and ended with an even-par 72 on Friday.  Teammate Jason Paek then was one stroke behind that with an opening round 73 (+1).  To keep the scores going, senior G.W. VanderZwaag carded a first round 74 (+2), recording three birdies and five bogeys on his round.
 
Fellow senior Dominick Schumacher was the fifth Rochester golfer and also broke 80, shooting an opening round 79 (+7).
 
On the overall scoreboard, Scott sits in a tie for 19th, Luftspring is T28, Paek T39, VanderZwaag T52 and Schumacher is T123.  Friday's opening round was played on the Pine Lakes at the Jekyll Island Golf Club which measures as a par-72 and 6,700 yards.
