Senior George Qian (Bettendorf, Iowa/Montverde Academy) of the Carnegie Mellon University men's golf team was named the University Athletics Association (UAA) Most Valuable Player at the 2017 UAA Championships on Sunday, March 12. The two-day, 36-hole championships were played at Hammock Beach Resort on the 6,972-yard, par-72 Conservatory Course in Palm Coast, Florida.

Using a match-play format, the Tartans dropped a 3-2 battle in the title match to the fifth-ranked Eagles of Emory University. The final team-point was decided in a playoff hole, with Emory's Connor Yakubov posting a par on the hole to seal the win for the Eagles.

Qian posted a 2-up win over Stefano Butti to record his second win of the championships. Junior Nikhil Mohan (Bangalore, India/Canadian International School) claimed the Tartans other point on Sunday with a 2-and-1 victory over Keenan Hickton. Mohan was also named to the All-Tournament team after winning both of his matches as well during the championships. Carnegie Mellon had a third member named to the All-Tournament team, as sophomore Patrick Tan (Vancouver, British Columbia/Prince of Wales Secondary) joined Qian and Mohan. Tan forced the playoff on Sunday after battling in the fifth and deciding match.
