Carnegie Mellon University Director of Athletics Josh Centor has announced the resignation of Nick Dunn as head men's golf coach effective September 13. Dan Rodgers, the Tartans' head women's golf coach, will serve as the interim head coach of the men's program as well as continuing his title as head coach of the women's program.
Dunn, who has been at the helm of the Tartans men's team since the start of the 2014 season, has accepted a position as lead golf instructor at Saddlebrook Preparatory School and Resort in Tampa, Florida. Saddlebrook is a premier preparatory program for elite golfers and Dunn will serve as a teacher and coach.
In Dunn's first season leading the Tartans, the men's golf team had two tournament victories, a second-place finish at the University Athletic Association (UAA) Championships and a school record for lowest two-round total. Last year, the men's team won four tournaments and set new program records both for the lowest one-round and three-round team scores.
"Nick has made a significant impact on our men's golfers during his time at Carnegie Mellon," said Centor. "He is an outstanding coach, and I know that he will continue to do great things and mentor young people who are passionate about the sport of golf."
Rodgers has been at the helm of the women's golf program since its first year of varsity collegiate competition in 2014-15. In Rodgers' second year, the Tartans were honored with the University Athletic Association (UAA) individual medalist in Summer Kitahara, UAA Rookie of the Year in Carly Jordan, as well as Kitahara being named to the Division III All-Region East Team by the Women's Golf Coaches Association (WGCA) and three All-UAA selections.
"I am grateful to Dan for his willingness to step up and take on responsibilities as interim head men's golf coach," Centor said. "He has set a positive tone for our women's golf program, and has worked closely with our men for the past two years. I know he is excited for the challenge, and we expect both programs to compete at a high level this season under his leadership."
Rodgers has been the assistant golf professional at the Sewickley Heights Golf Club in Sewickley, Pa. since 2009. He manages a staff of nearly 20, trains golf operations professionals, supervises tournaments and teaches clinics and lessons. Rodgers has also worked at the Wildwood Golf Club in Allison Park, Pa., and Valley Brook Country Club in McMurray, Pa. In 2008, he was elected as a PGA Professional and has been actively involved in tournament participation, including a 20th-place finish on the 2013 TriState PGA point list and a victory at the 2011 TriState PGA Assistants Championship.
Rodgers is a 2004 graduate of Slippery Rock University. He received a Bachelor of Science degree in business management. While at Slippery Rock, he was a three-year letter winner and a two-year captain for the golf team. Rodgers earned a Master of Science in sports management from California University of Pennsylvania in 2010 with a concentration in intercollegiate athletic administration.
