The Emory University golf team closed out its opening-round participation at the Discover DeKalb Invitational on Saturday. The Eagles are hosting the 36-hole tourney that is being played at the 6,510-yard, par-70 Smoke Rise Country Club in nearby Stone Mountain.
The No. 4-ranked Eagles stand second out of 15 teams after the first day of play, posting an 11-over park mark of 291. No. 1-ranked Huntingdon College sits atop the leader board at 289. Berry College holds down third place at 292 while No. 8 Rhodes and No. 6 Methodist are deadlocked for fourth at 295.
Junior Keenan Hickton came through with Emory's best score of the opening round with a one-over par 71, good for a seventh-place tie in the 87-player field. Sophomores Connor Yakubov and Stefano Butti each carded 73s, placing them in a tie for 14th place. Rounding out the team's scorers was freshman Sam Galloway with a four-over 74. Freshman Matt Organisak finished at 77.
Ryan Elmore of Berry, Will Thrash from Huntingdon and Greensboro College's Luke Grogan stand tied for the top spot with a one-under 69.
Emory is fielding a second side in the event with that squad registering a score of 307, tying for 10th place. Members of the team include Anthony Muscato(75), Sean Murphy (76), Chuck Isgar (77), Noah Apter (79) and Leo Rich (80).
