Emory Finishes Tied For 12th At NCAA Division III Men's Golf Championships

The Emory University golf team closed out its season on Friday when it played in the final round of the 2017 NCAA D-III Championships. The Eagles  played on the 6,844 yard, par-72 El Campeon Course at the Mission Inn Resort located in Howey-in-the-Hills, Florida.

Emory came through with its best effort of the four days, checking in with a nine-over par 297 that gave it a final team score of 1212, tying Claremont-Mudd-Scripps for 12th place on the leaderboard. The Championships started out with 42 teams before the field was cut to 18 for the final two rounds. The Eagles' score on Friday tied the program's ninth-best effort in a NCAA Tournament while its final team mark represented the fifth-best outing at nationals in school history.

No. 10-ranked Wittenberg claimed first place with a score of 1180 (298-290-299-293).  The Tigers held off runner-up and No. 17 Guilford who finished just two shots off the pace (300-293-296-293).  UT-Tyler was third (1188) and Huntingdon and Greensboro tied for fifth at 1190.

Sophomore Stefano Butti (Palm City, Fla.) wrapped up the Championships in stellar fashion, firing a two-under par 70, tying a school individual record for a low round at the NCAA Championships.  Butti finished the tournament with an effort of five-over par 293 (74-75-74-70), good for a ninth-place tie in the field and registering as the fourth-best score ever by an Emory player at nationals.

Freshman Sam Galloway bounced back from tough second and third rounds to post a two-over par 74, while freshman Matt Organisak and junior Keenan Hickton rounded out the Emory scorers on Friday with showings of 76 and 77, respectively. Sophomore Connor Yakubov checked in with a 78.  For the 72 holes, Organisak stood as the team's second-best scorer with a 305 (75-75-79-76), placing him in a tie for 46th on the leaderboard.  Yakubov totaled a 309 (77-77-77-78), Hickton a 314 (82-80-75-77) and Galloway a 318 (77-81-86-74).

Josh Gibson of Hope College and Garrett Brickley of Wittenberg tied for medalist honors with each player coming in at one-under par 287. Gibson prevailed in a playoff, making par on the first extra hole.
