The New York University men's golf team finished in a tie for eighth place at the Hershey Cup, which was hosted by the University of Rochester at the Hershey Country Club in Hershey, PA, on Sunday-Monday, April 2-3.
NYU shot 321 on day two to compile an overall score of 623. Allegheny College held on to their day-one lead to capture the title with a score of 602 (300-302).
"It's a learning curve," said Head Coach Brad Johnson. "We have a young team. We saw that we have to work on putting two days together. It's good that it happened now rather than in two weeks."
Freshman Matt Shen was NYU's top performer, finishing in a six-way tie for 21st place. The Honolulu, HI, native posted a total score of 155 (77-78) over the two-day tournament.
After leading all golfers at the Hershey Cup yesterday, Jensen Li dropped to 32nd following round two. The freshman shot an 85 on Monday to register an overall score of 157. Fellow freshman Kelly Sun also shot 157.
HIGHLIGHTS:
- Senior captain Eric Tarakjian finished in a six-way tie for 41st place by shooting 158 (76-82).
- Sophomore Luke Oberholtzer registered a score of 159 (78-81) to tie for 47th.
- Freshman Justin Chan, as NYU's individual, posted a score of 172 (87-85) and finished in 78th.
"Our short game just wasn't there," said Johnson. "We haven't had a lot of chances to work on our short game. That's what we are going to work on this week. If we are going to compete at next weekend's NYU Invitational, we are going to have to putt."
