The New York University men's golf team launched its 2016-17 season tied for second with Hamilton College after round one of the St. Lawrence University Invitational on Saturday, September 3. The weekend invitational is taking place at the Oliver D. Appleton Golf Course in Canton, NY.

Shooting 310 on the day, the Violets trail leader Clarkson University (306) by only four strokes. Host St. Lawrence is in fifth (315) after Round One.

Freshman Kelly Sun tied for sixth (75) with Utica College's freshman Patrick Coughlin to lead all the Violets. A standout last year, sophomore Qizhi Wong found himself in a five-way tie for ninth with a score of 77.

"They played pretty well today," Assistant Coach Meaghan Kenny reflected. "Our one (senior Eric Tarakjian) and two (sophomore Luke Oberholtzer) guys struggled a little bit. Ran into awkward situations. Kelly and Jensen (Li) played really well for their first collegiate rounds. Very beneficial to have our new guys come in like this."

HIGHLIGHTS:

- The aforementioned freshman Li tied for 14th after shooting 78 on the day.

- Not far behind was Tarakjian scoring an 80 to place him in a five-way tie for 18th.

- Oberholtzer finished the round in 29th place (82).

"Only four strokes behind. We are looking to make a run tomorrow," stated Kenny. "This is a much better team than we have had in the past. I can see a win. I can see Luke and Eric rebounding and responding well. Kelly is going to put us in contention. It would be great to get a win to start the season. It'd make for a great bus ride home."
