From NYU Athletics

The New York University men's golf team won the St. Lawrence University Invitational on Sunday, September 10, at the Oliver D. Appleton Golf Course in Canton, NY.

The Violets never relinquished their spot at the top of the scoreboard over the two-day event. After carrying a narrow six-stroke lead into play from Saturday's first round, the Violets held on to win by four strokes over Hamilton College after shooting a 306 (22-over-par) on Sunday.

NYU earned a final score of 600 (32-over-par) after shooting 294 (10-over-par) on Saturday. Hamilton (604), host St. Lawrence (608), Clarkson University (617), and Utica College (649) all finished behind the Violets.

"We struggled a bit today, but we were able to get the win which I'm very happy with," said NYU Head Coach Brad Johnson. "It was a total team effort today. I'm very proud of the way everyone battled out there and contributed to earn this win."

Sophomore Matt Shen led all Violets with a second-place finish. After shooting a 71 (even-par) on Saturday, he carded a 78 (+7) on Sunday to finish with a 149 over the two rounds, placing him just one stroke behind Hamilton's Joe Tigani, who won the event.

NYU freshman Patrick McNary finished tied for third with Hamilton's Robert Osborn after completing the event with a two-round total of 150, just two strokes off the lead.

"To get a win with such an inexperienced team, and in their first match of the year, it's amazing," Johnson stated. "It's a great way for us to start the season and I only look for us to get better as the season progresses. I like where we are after one match."

HIGHLIGHTS:

- Violet teammates Kelly Sun and Stian Lintvedt both finished tied for sixth after shooting 152 on the weekend.

- Jensen Li shot a team-leading 75 (4-over-par) on day two. He finished tied for 14th with a two-day total of 153.

- Four Violets earned finishes within the top-six: Shen (2nd), McNary (T-3rd), Sun (T-6th), Lintvedt (T-6th).

"Hopefully we can carry the momentum with us moving forward," added Johnson. "We still have work to do on our putting, but I expect that to come back once we get on some different courses."
