The University of Rochester golf team improved its score by six strokes from day one, but couldn't move up the leaderboard because of a strong field at the Jekyll Island Invitational on Saturday afternoon.
The Yellowjackets shot a team score of 8-over, 296 on day two at the Pine Lakes Course, totaling a score of 598 through two rounds and sits in a tie for 17th place.
5th-ranked Methodist University is the team leader with a combined score of 575 through 36 holes. #13 Guilford is second with a 580 and 6th-ranked Emory is third with 582. The field is packed tightly throughout, as the Yellowjackets are only 12 strokes out of seventh place.
Sophomore Jack Mulligan was Rochester's top golfer in round two, shooting a 1-over score of 73. His round was very consistent, filling his card with 15 pars, two bogeys and one birdie. He is +7 through two rounds and is tied for 66th place of 150 golfers.
UR's leader through two rounds is first-year Steven Zeng. He backed up a 1-under round from Friday with a 2-over round of 74 on Saturday. His +1 score has him in a tie for 16th place overall.
Jason Paek is in a tie for 35th place after two rounds after recording his second straight 2-over par round of 74. Both Paek and Zeng's scorecards featured two birdies and four bogeys.
First-year Ryan Dougherty drastically improved his score from round one to round two. He opened with an 83 on Friday, but shaved off eight strokes on Saturday, ending with a 3-over 75. He sits in T-114th place.
Classmate Aleksander Overli got his round off to a great start, sitting 3-under through seven holes, but found some trouble heading home and finished with a score of 6-over 78. He is tied for 112th.
The Yellowjackets also have three individuals competing in the Jekyll Island Individual Championship in first-years Declan Hickton and Matt Perez along with senior Corey Mitchener.
Hickton sits in a tie for 4th of 39 individuals after shooting a second round 2-over 74 on the Jekyll Island Oleander Course. His two-day total is 152.
Mitchener is tied for 25th after shooting his second straight round of 81, while Perez is 30th with a two-day score of 164 after shooting an 85 on Saturday.
