Rochester Takes UAA Men's Soccer Title

From University of Rochester Athletics

CLEVELAND, OH- The #12 University of Rochester men's soccer team earned sole possession of the University Athletic Association title by virtue of its 1-0 victory over Case Western Reserve University on Saturday evening.

Sophomore Andrew Greenway headed in a long throw in from teammate Jarvis D'Souza in the 77th minute and senior goalkeeper Mike Moranz made a great diving save with just over two minutes remaining to preserve the shutout for the Yellowjackets (13-2-2, 5-1-1 UAA).  Case drops to 6-7-4 on the year and 1-5-1 in conference.

The UAA title is Rochester's 10th overall since the conference's inception and seventh outright crown.  The last time UR won the conference was back in 2009 when they shared the crown with Carnegie and Chicago.  The last UR outright title was in 2007.  This is head coach Chris Apple's fifth conference title as a coach and eighth overall with Rochester (he won three as a player from 1988-90).

The Yellowjackets best chance in the first half came 26 minutes in when a Shane Dobles shot was saved by Case keeper Ari Lewis who let the ball sit right in the box after the stop.  Lewis then scrambled to cover the ball right as it got to the foot of senior Max Fan, keeping UR off the board.

Case's Logan Glosser then recorded the best opportunity for the Spartans three minutes later when he was fed the ball alone in close to the UR net.  Unfortunately for Case, his first touch was a little strong and allowed the Yellowjacket defense to recover, eventually blocking his shot away.

Before his goal late in the game, Greenway nearly missed two other goals off headers from sideline throw in's.  He first drifted a header just wide in the 39th minute and then another opportunity went wide of Lewis with 18:40 remaining in the contest.

After the Greenway goal, Case looked to score the equalizer with 2:12 remaining, but Moranz made a great stop on Case leading scorer Chris Cvecko who was looking to the low right corner of the net.  That was Moranz's lone save in his fifth solo shutout of the year.  Lewis made four saves in the CWRU net.

In the game, Rochester held a 20-6 shot advantage while the Spartans evened the tally in corners, with four apiece.
