UAA Athlete of the Week Tyler Savonen Named ECAC Player of the Week

Brandeis University senior Tyler Savonen of Orleans, Mass., has been selected as University Athletic Association (UAA) and Eastern College Athletic Conference (ECAC) Division III New England men's soccer Offensive Player of the Week for September 9.

Savonen earned weekly honors from the UAA for his performance against Bridgewater State University on Sept. 6. In 90-degree heat, Savonen was involved in three of the Judges' four goals in a 4-1 victory. He scored the team's first and third goals in the 12th and 31st minutes, respectively, and assisted sophomore Zach Vieira's game-winner in the 24th minute. It was his fifth career multi-goal game and his second five-point game, following his hat trick against Mass. Maritime Academy last season.

This was Savonen's second career UAA Athlete of the Week honor. He joins classmateMichael Soboff as UAA honorees this season. It his first honor from the ECAC.

With a team-high seven points this season, Savonen has moved into 13th on Brandeis's career scoring list with 73 points, while his 29 career goals are 10th in school history. He was named an Honorable Mention to the All-UAA team as a junior.

Brandeis is off to a 4-0 start this season. The Judges were ranked 15th in Division III when they faced Bridgewater State and have since moved up to 9th. In head coach Michael Coven's 42nd season on the sidelines, Brandeis is looking for a third-straight trip to the NCAA Division III championship tournament. They reached the Sweet 16 in each of the past two seasons.
