Rochester Men's Soccer To Explore Germany For 10 Days

From University of Rochester Athletics

Every three years the University of Rochester men's soccer team gets to travel overseas and experience a new culture, visit picturesque landmarks and also compete in athletic competition to keep their skills sharp.

This year the Yellowjackets will again be traveling to Germany, the site of the last international tour in 2011.  Overall, this is the fourth trip UR has taken to Europe as the team went to Spain in 2005 and 2008.  The team departs today from the Toronto airport and will arrive in Amsterdam tomorrow afternoon before bussing to its first stop in Frankfurt Thursday evening.

On Friday, UR gets its first taste of German competition as the Yellowjackets will train at TS Ober Roden in the morning and take on the host club in a 7 pm night match.  The following day the team will get to explore the city and take in attractions such as the Cathedral of St. Bartholomew and Staedel Museum before meeting up as a group to watch the DFB Pokal Final (Bayern Munich vs. Borussia Dortmund) on television.  Sunday sees another match for the UR student athletes as they take on another German Club team in Bad Vilbel.

The team will then bus to Cologne on Monday and embark on a brief tour of the city before departing for Gelsenkirchen on Tuesday.  There, the Yellowjackets will train at Schalke and take in a tour and the history of the "Ultras", one of Germany's most historic and popular Bundesliga franchises.  Rochester will then play its third and final match of the trip on Wednesday night against 1. FC Bocholt.

As the tour winds down, the sightseeing opportunities continue as on Thursday the team will tour the Früh Brewery.  Friday, UR will return to Amsterdam and explore the city, seeing places such as the Anne Frank House and the Dutch Resistance Museum before departing for the airport to return home the following day.
