Tyler Savonen Leads Judges to 1-0 Victory Over CWRU

From Brandeis University Athletics

The #4 Brandeis Men's Soccer (10-0, 1-0) team took on their first UAA conference opponent when Case Western Reserve University (6-4-1, 0-1) came to visit today.

During the first half of play, the Judges were able to get most of the opportunities but freshman goalkeeper Calvin Boyle (Pittsburgh, Pa./Chartiers Valley) was able to stop all four shots that came his way. The CWRU Spartans also had their chances in the first when they put pressure on senior goalie Joe Graffy (Concord, N.H./Concord) to make two saves. Neither team was able to capitalize during the half and both teams headed to the locker room tied 0-0.

As the second started both teams took chances in order to take the lead before the other. Spartan junior Chris Cvecko tested Graffy with a shot that came from a free kick that Graffy had to punch over the net. The Judges and the Spartans battled until the end of regulation still 0-0.

During overtime, Brandeis took charge as they held their opponents to no shots and getting a total of seven themselves. With the clock winding down to 1:46 in the 2nd overtime, senior Tyler Savonen (Orleans, Mass./Nauset Regional) took the ball deep into the box where he was dragged down by a Case Western player. This led to a penalty shot that proved to be a heartbreaker for the Spartans, giving the Judges their 10th straight win and longest streak since 1985 when they won 15 in a row.

Graffy for Brandeis had five saves on the day while Boyle for Case Western had 8. The Judges have outshot their opponent for the 10th straight game this season with the shot totals at 20-9 in favor on the Judges. They also have shutout each of their last seven opponents.
