#7 Brandeis Sits Atop the UAA After 1-0 Win Over #9 Emory

From Brandeis University Athletics

The #7 Brandeis men's soccer team (14-1, 3-1 UAA) was able to slide past the #9 Emory Eagles (11-3-1, 1-3 UAA) with a 1-0 victory that puts them in first place in the University Athletic Association.

Both teams had a fair amount of chances in the first half but neither could convert. One of the better chances for the Judges came only 45 seconds into the game when sophomore Evan Jastremski (Marshfield, Mass./ Marshfield) ran the ball down the right flank and passed to sophomore Zach Vieira (Andover, Mass/ Brooks School) who shot just wide of the net. Emory's best chance came in the last minute of the half. Sophmore Connor Curtin (Louisville, Ky./ Trinity) had a nice kick from the left side that senior goalkeeper Joe Graffy(Concord, N.H./ Concord) had to make a leap to save. The half ended with both teams having four shots and a score tied at 0-0.

The second half started just as the first had ended with both teams trading shots. The first and only goal of the game came at 49:42 when senior Tyler Savonen (Orleans, Mass./ Nauset Regional) was pulled down in the box and burying the ensuing penalty shot. The penalty shot is Savonen's second game-winning penalty shot of the season with the first coming against Case back on October 5th. Brandeis was able to finish strong and hold the lead to defeat Emory giving them their seventh 1-0 victory on the season.

The Judges outshot the Eagles 9-7 with Graffy stopping all four shots that came his way. Emory sophomore goalie Abe Hannigan (Montrose, N.Y./ Hendrick Hudson) saved two of the three shots he saw.
