From Brandeis University Athletics/Washington University Athletics

The third-ranked Brandeis University men's soccer team won in dramatic fashion tonight, defeating host Washington University , 2-1 in overtime, on the Bears' home turf. With the win, the Judges improve to 16-1, 4-1 in the University Athletic Association (UAA). They also keep pace with the 1985 squad for the program's best start to a season. WashU falls to 7-6-1, 0-4-1 in the UAA. Brandeis improved to 3-0 in UAA overtime games, while Washington fell to 0-3-1 when playing more than 90 minutes.

The game-winning goal came in the 96th minute. Judge sophomore midfielder Josh Ocel (North Attleboro, Mass./Worcester Acad.) crossed a ball squarely on the head of senior back Robbie Lynch (Weymouth, Mass./Weymouth). Lynch put it in the back of the net, scoring his second game-winning goal of the season and of his career. The assist was Ocel's eighth of the campaign, putting him atop the UAA leaders.

The Judges forced overtime in the final minute of regulation. The equalizer came off the foot of sophomore Evan Jastremski (Marshfield, Mass./Marshfield), whose cross into the box was deflected by a Bear defender for an own goal.

Washington became only the second team this season to take a lead on Brandeis when the Bears scored in the 60thminute. Junior Jack West was taken down in the box and was called on to take a penalty kick. West converted for his eighth goal of the season, and fourth by way of the PK. It was only the fifth goal surrendered by the Judges in 2014, second-fewest in Division III.

After West's goal, Brandeis picked up its play and nearly tied the game in the 69th minute after sophomore Mike Lynch's (Weymouth, Mass./Weymouth) header went over the head of Washington rookie keeper Daniel Geanon and off the crossbar and out of bounds. Geanon continued to stand tall in the net and made a diving stop on a heel flick from senior Tyler Savonen (Orleans, Mass./Nauset Regional) in the 75th minute to keep it a one-goal game. He made another save in the 81st minute after sophomore Zach Vieira (Andover, Mass./Brooks School) was left open in the box but did not get much on a shot.

In the scoreless first half, Washington U. had a 5-4 shot advantage and controlled play. The Bears first scoring chance in the first half came in the 12th minute after West was taken down outside the 18. The free kick from West was just left of Brandeis senior goalkeeper Joe Graffy (Concord, N.H./Concord).

For the game, Brandeis outshot Washington, 17-9, including 13-4 in the second half and overtime. Graffy finished with two saves for his 16th win of the season, while Geanon suffered the loss with five stops.
