Junior Ben Alderoty (Rumson, N.J./Rumson-Fair Haven Regional) picked the right time to score his first career goal as he helped the Carnegie Mellon University men's soccer team tie a University Athletic Association (UAA) match against Case Western Reserve University on Friday, October 31 in a steady rain. The Tartans are now 8-4-2 on the year and 2-1-2 in UAA play while the Spartans sit at 8-4-4 and 2-1-2.
Alderoty's goal came in the 82nd minute when he riffled a volley to the upper left corner tying the score at 1-1. Alderoty settled a bouncing ball inside the 18-yard box that came off the head of a defender after a long ball into the box by senior Mark Nicholas (Metuchen, N.J./Hun School of Princeton).
Case Western Reserve got on the board first in the 61st minute after a scramble in the box following a free kick. Michael Balog was able to get a shot past Tartan senior keeper Jacob Rice (Gahanna, Ohio/Gahanna Lincoln) after the defense wasn't able to fully clear the ball.
The game went to overtime but not before Rice made a diving save on a free kick by Jacob Grindel in the 88th minute.
The overtime periods were played evenly with both teams having opportunities to take the win. The Spartans had a shot go wide and a shot blocked in the first overtime while Alderoty saw a shot go high. In the second 10-minute period, senior Colin Shaffer (Huntington Beach, Calif./St. Margaret's Episcopal School) had a shot saved by Calvin Boyle before two more Spartan attempts were off the mark.
