Carnegie Mellon University junior Connor Webb (Dallas, Texas/J.J. Pearce) scored twice as the men's soccer team won its sixth game of the year and fourth straight by defeating Grove City College 2-1 on the road Saturday, September 27. The Tartans close the non-conference schedule with a 6-3 record while the Wolverines drop to 5-3-1.

The Tartans fell behind in the 37th minute when Grove City's Jonathan Rothgeb finished off a pass from Tyler Snow. Rothgeb's shot came from 16 yards out and beat Tartan senior keeper Jacob Rice (Gahanna, Ohio/Gahanna Lincoln) to the near post.

All three of the Tartans' shots for the half were saved by Wolverine keeper Ben Weaver.

Carnegie Mellon equalized in the second half when Webb scored his sixth goal of the year on a penalty kick in the 55th minute after a Tartan was fouled inside the box.

The Tartans kept the offensive pressure alive as Webb had two shots on goal, 10 seconds apart in the 62nd minute, but Weaver was there to make both saves.

Freshman Matt De Jesus (Cincinnati, Ohio/Summit Country Day) had a shot saved in the 71st minute and senior Louis Ferragonio (Pittsburgh, Pa./Plum) hit the crossbar in the 77th minute before Webb struck with the game winner in the 84th minute.

Webb's seventh marker of the year came when he finished off a one-on-one with the keeper after junior Dimitrije Slavkovic (Pittsburgh, Pa./Mt. Lebanon) slipped him a pass around a defender.

Earning his fourth win of the year in goal, Rice made two saves, both in the first half as all five of Grove City's second-half shots were off the mark.

"We were very happy with our team today," head coach Brandon Bownman said, referring to his coaching staff. "The first half didn't go our way and Grove City deserved its lead. We needed to make some adjustments at the half and our players responded in a big way. We turned the game around and earned the victory. This was a very satisfying win."
