Four different Spartans scored as the Case Western Reserve University men's soccer team earned a 4-0 win versus Guilford College (N.C.) at the Fred Meyers adidas ® Invitational hosted by Ohio Wesleyan University.
The victory was the first of the season for CWRU, now 1-1-1 overall.
Freshman forward Michael Balog (Chapel Hill, N.C./East Chapel Hill) and sophomore forward Joshua Prosser (Springfield, Va./South County) led the offense with a goal and an assist each, while junior forward Matthew Zembas (Overland Park, Kan./Blue Valley N.W.) and junior midfielder Slater Jameson (Pittsford, N.Y./Pittsford Mendon) also found the back of the net.
CWRU struck for its first goal in the ninth minute off a corner kick opportunity. Prosser took the kick, junior midfielder Chris Cvecko (Erie, Pa./McDowell) sent in a header, and Balog buried a shot for the early 1-0 lead. Nearly 14 minutes later, the Spartans struck again as Zembas scored his second goal of the season, courtesy of a feed by Balog from near the end line. The Spartans added a pair of insurance goals late to put the match out of reach.
Overall, CWRU outshot Guilford, 21-11, and held a 10-1 advantage in corner kicks.
In net, sophomore Thomas Nolan (Powell, Ohio/Columbus Academy) made three saves to earn the win in his first career match. Marko Mandalinic took the loss for Guilford.
