Pair of Second-Half Goals Lifts Spartans Past Mary Washington

From Case Western Reserve University Athletics

Senior defender Taylor Fletcher (Missouri City, Texas/Strake Jesuit College Prep) and freshman forward Michael Balog (Chapel Hill, N.C./East Chapel Hill) each netted unassisted goals as the Case Western Reserve University men's soccer team defeated the University of Mary Washington, 1-0, on Saturday evening at the Fred Meyers adidas® Invitational.

The victory gives the Spartans a 2-0 record at the weekend event and boosts their overall season mark to 2-1-1. Up next, CWRU opens the home portion of the 2014 schedule on Wednesday, September 10, against cross-town rival Baldwin Wallace University at 7:30 p.m.

Fletcher broke a scoreless tie in the 52nd minute when he buried a rebound opportunity off of a deflected shot for his second career goal. The chance was initially set up following a corner kick taken by sophomore forward Joshua Prosser (Springfield, Va./South County).  Then, in the 77th minute, Balog expanded the Spartan lead by evading a defender in the box to score his second goal in as many matches.

Freshman goalkeeper Calvin Boyle (Pittsburgh, Pa./Chartiers Valley) earned the shutout victory in his first career start, stopping both shots on goal by Mary Washington.

For the match, Mary Washington outshot CWRU, 18-11, but the Spartans held a 5-4 advantage in corner kick opportunities.

Following the event, Balog, Chris Cvecko (Erie, Pa./McDowell), Bairdy Hansen (Cazenovia, N.Y./Manlius Pebble Hill) and Ryan Meyer (Lebanon, Ohio/Bishop Fenwick) were named to the All-Tournament Team, while Meyer earned Most Valuable Player honors for his play over the weekend.
