Sebastian Hardington’s Golden Strike in OT Lifts #13 Emory over Covenant

Sebastian Hardington’s Golden Strike in OT Lifts #13 Emory over Covenant

From Emory University Athletics

Emory University junior Sebastian Hardington scored his first goal of the season, a game-winning 'golden goal' just under six minutes into the second-overtime period, to give the 13th-ranked Eagles a 2-1 win over Covenant College at the Woodruff Physical Education Center on Wednesday night.

With the score knotted at a goal apiece, sophomore Jason Andrejchak started the Eagles' attack down the far side of the field, crossing the ball inside the 18-yard box to senior Dylan Price.  Price was able to ground the ball to Hardington, who finished strong for the match-clinching score.

It marked the first career game-winning goal in overtime for Hardington, and gave the Eagles' their first overtime win since a 1-0 overtime win at New York University on October 28th, 2012.  Emory remained undefeated on the season with the win, improving to 4-0-1, while Covenant dropped to 2-2-0.

Both teams had their opportunities in the first half, but the defenses each held tight to keep the game scoreless heading into the break.  Emory was able to hold Covenant to just four shots in the first half, none of which were on goal, while the Eagles launched seven shots, a pair of which were on target.

Covenant, however, would be the aggressor early in the second half.  After a free kick attempt from Noah Wiersema from just outside the 18-yard box hit off the crossbar in the 52nd minute, the Scots would finally get on the board in the 53rd minute.  Danny Knight sent a long ball forward from the Covenant backfield that got behind the Emory defense, which Snoopy Davidson caught up to, setting up a one-on-one with Emory keeper Abe Hannigan.  Davidson would win out, placing a shot into the net for his second goal of the season, giving the Scots a 1-0 advantage.

The Eagles would even the match in the 65th minute, taking advantage of a long throw from senior Jeffrey Cochran.  Having just entered the game prior to the throw, Cochran launched one to the middle of the six yard box.  Junior co-captain Matt Sherr headed the ball down, and freshman Jason McCartney tapped it past the Covenant keeper to even the score at 1-1.

It was the second goal of the season for McCartney, while Cochran and Sherr each picked up their first assists of the campaign.

While neither team would score again until Hardington's overtime game-winner, the Eagles had two of the stronger opportunities to record goals the remainder of the match.  In the 84th minute, Andrejchak sent a shot on goal that was headed by a defender on the goal-line, deflecting it off the crossbar to prevent the score.  Just under 90 seconds into the second overtime, it was Price who took a shot on goal, but Covenant goalkeeper Daniel Kubin deflected it just wide of frame.

Emory finished the match with a 17-11 edge in total shots, and a 7-2 advantage in shots on goal.  Hannigan made one save for the Eagles in goal, and now has an 0.74 goals-against average this season.
