‘Golden Goal’ Gives Emory Men's Soccer Head Coach Sonny Travis Win #100

From Emory University Athletics

Emory University junior Sebastian Hardington connected on a header off a long throw-in from senior Jeffrey Cochran in the 107th minute, to give the sixth-ranked Eagles a 2-1 double overtime win over Oglethorpe University on Wednesday night at the Woodruff P.E. Center, and Head Coach Sonny Travis his 100th career victory with the squad.

The Eagles remained one of the 14 unbeaten teams in Division III, earning their tenth-straight victory since a season-opening tie to improve to 10-0-1 overall.  Oglethorpe dropped to 5-5-1 with the loss.

Travis, who took over the Emory program prior to the 2007 campaign, improved to 100-32-10 during his eight seasons with the Eagles.

Meanwhile, Hardington became the first Emory player since teammate Dylan Price in 2011 to record multiple 'golden goals' in a season, and just the fifth player overall in the program's history.  He leads all Emory players this season with six goals (including four in his last three games), and his five game-winning goals are the most by a Division III player this season, and two shy of the program's single-season record.

Cochran picked up his second assist of the year on the throw-in, and the eighth assist on a game-winning goal of his career, tying him for seventh-place in the program's record book.

The game was a hard-fought battle throughout between the crosstown opponents.  The first half of the contest was played tightly by both squads, with Oglethorpe holding narrow advantages in both shots (7-5) and shots on goal (2-1) after the first 45 minutes of action.

However, neither team would get on the board until the 62nd minute, when Oglethorpe's Angel Salome scored off a through-ball from Nick Muntean, collecting his third goal of the year and giving the Stormy Petrels a 1-0 advantage.  The score ended a streak of 477 minutes and 27 seconds of shutout soccer by Emory's defense.

Emory would even the score in the 77th minute, as sophomore Scott Haley launched a shot from 35 yards out that short-hopped the Oglethorpe keeper, Vaughn Moore, and found its way into the net.  Haley would earn his second goal of the campaign on the equalizer, while senior Zachary Rosenberg collected his second assist.

Neither team would score for the remainder of regulation, sending the contest into overtime.  Emory had two strong chances in the first overtime period, one on a shot from Price in the 94th minute that was tipped over the crossbar by Moore, and a second when an offside call negated a goal from Price in the 97th minute.

Oglethorpe would be the aggressor early in the second overtime, forcing Emory goalkeeper Abe Hannigan to make two of his season-high seven saves during the frame.  However, the Petrels would be unable to notch the game winner, leaving the door open for Hardington's 'golden goal' minutes later.

Hannigan improved to 9-0-1 in goal for Emory this season, and now has a 0.57 goals-against average with a .842 save percentage.  The Eagles outshot Oglethorpe 23-20 in the game, with the Stormy Petrels holding an 8-7 edge in shots on goal.

The Eagles' 10 game winning streak is the third-longest in the program's history, and six behind the program record, set during the 2008 campaign.  The team's 13 game unbeaten streak (dating back to the final two games of the 2013 campaign) is the tied for the third-longest mark by an Emory squad as well.
