The New York University men's soccer team defeated Emory
University 1-0 in a home University Athletic Association (UAA)
contest on Friday, October 17, at Gaelic Park in Riverdale,
NY.
The Violets (11-2-0, 2-1-0 UAA) upended the Eagles (11-2-1,
1-2-0 UAA), who came into the game ranked #9 by the National Soccer
Coaches Association of America (NSCAA), despite being outshot
22-8.
It was the defense that led the way to victory, as NYU
goalkeeper Lucas
Doucette recorded a
season-high 10 saves and the squad withstood a barrage of corner
kicks by Emory late in the contest.
"The most important part of the
contest was the last three minutes," said NYU Head
Coach Joe
Behan. "We defended about
six corners one after the other, after the other, after the other.
I felt that the team completely gelled in that moment. It was an
incredible ending to the game."
HIGHLIGHTS:
- Malcolm Montilus scored the game's only goal on a
breakaway at the 55:19 mark. Deniz Oncu's pass over the Eagles' defense led to the
score.
- Montilius' goal was the
Violets' only shot on net.
- Doucette's shutout was his
fifth of the season.
"Lucas did really really well in
goal. He handled the ball well," Behan explained. "He's getting his
kicks right and had great energy back there against one of the
top-ranked teams in the country."
- Emory had a 10-1 advantage in
corner kicks.
- Vegas Kastberg was the only Violet to take multiple
shots (3).
"It's a great win. But, every win
is important in the UAA," Behan added. "We still have four games
left, but this win leads to a lot of belief as we kept a top team
from getting to the back of the net."
