Chicago and Carnegie Mellon Play to Scoreless Draw

From University of Chicago Athletics

In the opening conference match of the season, the University of Chicago men's soccer team battled Carnegie Mellon University to a 0-0 tie on Saturday.

The Maroons ran their record to 6-4-1 overall and 0-0-1 in the University Athletic Association (UAA). The Tartans moved to 6-3-1, 0-0-1 UAA.

Both teams created plenty of chances for themselves throughout the game. UChicago came close in the 24th minute when senior forward Kyle Kurfirst knocked his header shot off the post. But the offenses really kicked into gear in the second half, combining for 26 shots in the period.

The goalkeepers were kept busy and made nine saves apiece. Freshman Hill Bonin (4-1-1) set a new career-high in saves, topping the five he made versus Carthage College on Sept. 27.

Carnegie Mellon held a narrow 23-22 advantage in shots while corner kicks were firmly in UChicago's favor at 8-4. The game got chippy as it went on and the referee handed out eight yellow cards combined.
