From University of Chicago Athletics

The University of Chicago men's soccer team scored twice in the second half to defeat Dominican University 2-1 in the season opener on Friday.

The Maroons begin the year at 1-0-0 while the Stars start 0-1-0.

UChicago and Dominican were scheduled to kickoff the 2013 season as well, but the game was cancelled in the second half due to stormy weather. This year, the two sides had several scoring chances in the opening half. However, the game was tied 0-0 at halftime.

The visitors nearly got on the board in 12th minute with successive shots on goal by junior Jorge Bilbao and sophomore Brenton Desai. Both shots were saved by the goalkeeper. Later, Dominican smacked a shot off the post in the 42nd minute. UChicago took six shots in the first half and the Stars took five shots. Junior goalkeeper Brett Wiesen made two saves for the Maroons in 45 minutes of action.

In the second half, freshman Hill Bonin made his collegiate debut replacing Wiesen in goal. The Maroons supported him quickly with the game's first score at 49:24. Senior Nick Codispoti drilled a shot inside the far post from 32 yards out to make it 1-0. The hosts eventually tied the score in the 69th minute on a penalty kick by Ryan Ybarra.

UChicago shrugged off the equalizer four minutes later to retake the lead. Senior Nic Lopez netted the goal with an assist from sophomore Brad Bozych at 72:38. The score remained 2-1 the rest of way.

Shot totals went in favor of UChicago 11-10, including a 5-4 shots on goal margin. Corner kicks were even at four apiece. Bonin (1-0-0) got the win with one save and one goal allowed in his 45 minutes of action.
