The University of Rochester men's soccer team pulled an
upset of 4th-ranked Brandeis University with a 2-1 win in UAA
conference play on Saturday at Fauver Stadium.
Sophomore Ben Swanger and junior Jeffrey Fafinski netted
goals for the Yellowjackets (6-3-2, 1-1 UAA) in handing the Judges
(11-1, 1-1 UAA) their first loss of the season. Foti Andreo
found the net late for Brandeis, making it a game in the closing
minutes.
Ben Swanger scored his first goal Saturday.
In the 57th minute, Swanger picked up a loose ball along the
right sideline and lofted a perfect shot into the top left corner
of the net past Brandeis keeper Joe Graffy. The goal was
Swanger's first of the season.
The lead would double to 2-0 at 71:36 when Fafinski curved in
a goal directly off a corner kick for the Yellowjackets.
Andreo's goal came in the 87th minute when he bent a hard
shot from over 20 yards out into the right side of the net, giving
UR keeper Michael Shatkin no shot to make the save.
The two teams battled through a scoreless first half with
each team generating an excellent chance with the first coming in
the 9th minute when UR senior Alex Swanger headed a point blank
chance right into the arms of a diving Gaffy off a long throw
in.
The Judges then would get a golden chance to get on the board
at 31:25 when Mike Lynch was one-on-one with Shatkin, but the
sophomore goalie just came out and grabbed the ball as soon as it
reached Lynch's foot, making the save. Both Shatkin and Gaffy
made four saves on the day.
In the second half, Alex Swanger again had a solid
opportunity to score off a long throw in, but this time his shot in
the opening minutes of the second half smacked off the cross bar
and away to safety.
