Senior Jonathan Lipsey made the most of his Senior Day, scoring a pair of goals to lead the Washington University in St. Louis men's soccer team to a 2-0 win over New York University Sunday at Francis Field.
The Bears controlled the possession throughout the first half, and in the 13th minute, freshman Chris Rieger sent a cross in from the corner that junior Jack West got a head on in the middle of the box. West deflected it to the top corner of the box to Lipsey, who fired a shot across the goal to the left corner of the net to put the Bears up 1-0.
Washington U. limited NYU to just one shot in the first half as the Bears maintained the 1-0 lead to halftime. NYU came out aggressively to start the second half and was able to get the ball into the box a couple times in the first five minutes of the period, but Washington U.'s defense held the Violets in check to keep the 1-0 lead intact.
The Bears regained control of the possession around the 60th minute. Lipsey and junior Cole Davis each had shots go wide, but the Bears got a corner kick and West sent the ball into play. The ball bounced around before Lipsey collected it outside the top corner of the box, turned to his left and bent a shot to the far upper 90 of the net to make it 2-0 in the 65thminute. The Bears had a chance to make it 3-0 with a penalty kick in the 70th minute, but the attempt sailed over the crossbar.
New York had one more good opportunity to score in the final five minutes of the half, but senior goalkeeper David Wang punched the ball out to preserve the shutout for the Bears.
Both teams finished with 10 shots in the match, but Washington U. had a 4-0 advantage in shots on goal. Sophomore Daniel Geanon improved to 5-5-1 in goal, playing the first 76 minutes, before being replaced by Wang for the final 14 minutes.
Washington U. improved to 8-6-2 overall and 1-4-1 in the UAA with the win. The Bears conclude the regular season by hosting the University of Chicago at 11 a.m. Saturday, Nov. 8, at Francis Field.
Bear Notebook: Washington U. leads the all-time series against NYU 23-4-1, and the Bears have won each of the last four meetings between the two teams … It was the first time in 10 years that a match between the two teams was decided by more than one goal … The penalty kick in the second half was the ninth attempted by Washington U. this season … It was the seventh shutout of the season for the Bears.
