From Brandeis University Athletics/Tufts University Athletics

The Brandeis University men's soccer team went on the road and defeated the defending national champions today, as the Judges - ranked No. 7 in the nation by D3soccer.com and No. 16 by the NSCAA - took out the top-ranked Tufts University Jumbos, 1-0, on their own field.

The Judges scored their lone goal in the 29th minute as Zach Vieira (Andover, Mass./Brooks School)headed in a pass from the left side off the foot of teammate Patrick Flahive (Chatham, Ill. / Worcester Acad.), just over the head of Jumbos goalkeeper Scott Greenwood.

Tufts (5-1) had multiple chances in the first half to get on the board before the Brandeis (7-1) goal, as junior Gaston Becherano had a free kick just blocked in the 12th minute and senior Connor Brown took a light shot in the 20th minute from the top of the box after back-to-back Jumbos corners.

In the second half, senior Jason Kayne made an attempt at a pass from the right side, turning for a bicycle kick that sailed just high of the goal in the 85th minute, resulting in Tufts final opportunity to tie up the match.

The Jumbos outshot the Judges over the course of the game, 11-4, as both goalies made two saves a piece and Brandeis keeper Ben Woodhouse (Suffield, Conn./Suffield) recorded the shutout.

With the win, Brandeis handed the Jumbos just their third loss since the start of the last season. The Judges were responsible for one of the other two defeats as well, with a 2-0 win in Waltham in 2014. Of Brandeis's seven wins this season, six have been by a 1-0 score, including the last five in a row.
