Senior William Webb's (Dallas, Texas/J.J. Pearce) 12th goal of the season 4:40 into the first overtime lifts the Carnegie Mellon University men's soccer team to a 3-2 victory over visiting Mount Aloysius College Wednesday, October 21. The win moves the Tartans record to 9-2-3 while the Mounties are now 10-5-1.
Mount Aloysius was first to get on the scoreboard on an own goal that deflected of a Tartan defender in the 37th minute of play. The Tartans answered before the first half came to a close, as the teams enter the half knotted at 1-1. Freshman Philip Petrakian's (Redwood City, Calif./Sacred Heart Preparatory) serve pass deflected off a Mounties defenders head right to the foot of freshman Sean MacPherson (Palo Alto, Calif./Gunn) who fired the shot to the back of the net with six seconds showing on the clock.
With 4:30 to play in regulation, Mount Aloysius' Aubrey Brown one-touched a corner kick by Jim Smith and laid it past Tartans senior keeper Eric Bykowsky (Columbia, S.C./Irmo). The score gave the visitor's a 2-1 advantage.
Seventy-four seconds later, Carnegie Mellon equalized on Webb's first goal of the night. The senior took a loose ball off the Mounties keeper, Kyle Lachance, after a break through and fired the ball to the open net to send the game into overtime.
In the extra frame, Webb's goal came when he got behind a Mountie defender and took a pass from freshman Zack Masciopinto (Arlington Heights, Ill./Buffalo Grove) and shot the ball on goal which deflected off Lachance's hands and went in the back of the net.
