Emory Routs St. Joseph's 7-1 in Sonny Carter Invitational

From Emory University Athletics

Sebastian Hardington and Christian Meyer scored two goals apiece as the 23rd-ranked Emory men's soccer team defeated St. Joseph's College (Long Island) 7-1 in the first game of the Sonny Carter Invitational.

The Eagles will now play Denison University in the final game of the Sonny Carter Invitational on Sunday afternoon with the opening kickoff scheduled for 2:00pm. The winner will claim the Sonny Carter Invitational title as the Big Red were victorious earlier in the day, defeating Oglethorpe 1-0 in overtime.

St. Joseph's opened the scoring just seven minutes into the game as Justin Heredia put one in the back of the net off a Dan Cheeseman corner but then it was all Blue and Gold for the rest of the contest.

Just under five minutes later Hardington knotted the game at 1-1 with his first goal of the game. The senior headed in the equalizer off a Gabriel Vasconcelos corner kick.

Dan Busichio put Emory in front 2-1 at the 28:52 mark as he put one past the goalie on a Cody Gardiner cross. The SJC keeper made a diving attempt at the cross but the ball went off his hands and right to Busichio who buried the ball into the net.

Meyer then scored back-to-back goals just over four minutes apart to close out the first half for the Eagles. Meyer scored his first tally at the 36:16 mark by redirecting a Scott Haley shot. 4:23 minutes later, Meyer scored from just inside the 18 off a great cross by Eli Curtin to give the Eagles a 4-1 edge heading into the break.

Max Gomas opened the second half scoring in the 78th minute as the junior headed in a Nick Schook pass from close range. Almost six minutes later, Darion Morgan made it 6-1 as he scored from just inside the 18 off the feed from Schook.

Hardington rounded out the scoring, finding the back of the net with just 38 seconds to go, kicking in the pass from Moustafa Khattab from just in front of the goal.

Emory dominated possession, outshooting SJC 24-2 in the game including a 14-2 edge in shots on goal. The Eagles also held an 8-2 advantage in corner kicks.

Abe Hannigan made one save in his 74:02 minutes of action. Sophomore Graham Labran-Boyd made his second career appearance, playing the remaining 15:58 minutes of the game and did not see a shot.
