Maroons Rack Up Five Goals in Win at Aurora

From University of Chicago Athletics

The University of Chicago men's soccer team wrapped up the non-conference portion of its schedule with a dominant 5-0 victory at Aurora University on Sunday.

The Maroons improved to 9-4-2 and the Spartans fell to 8-7-2. UChicago leads the all-time series between the two teams 8-6-2.

UChicago got rolling offensively early and it soon paid dividends in the 20th minute. The visitors earned a corner kick and the initial header shot by freshman midfielder Max Lopez was blocked. But sophomore defender Stacey Reimann immediately followed it up and knocked in a header of his own to open the scoring.

Less than a minute later, the Maroons were awarded a penalty kick on an Aurora foul in the goalie box. Junior forward Brenton Desai stepped to the line and buried his third penalty kick of the season to make it 2-0.

The lead increased to 3-0 in the 32nd minute of the contest when freshman forward Matthew Koh sprung Lopez for a breakaway goal. Two minutes into the second half, Lopez scored again on another assist by Koh. Lopez ranks second on the team with six goals while Koh leads the Maroons with seven assists.

UChicago continued its cluster scoring three minutes later. Desai nailed his team-leading ninth goal of the season from 25 yards out unassisted. The nine goals match his career high that he set in 2014.

The Maroons came away with an 18-6 advantage in shots while corner kicks were even at six apiece. Sophomore goalkeeper Hill Bonin (8-4-2 record) played the opening 53:10 and made two saves to get the win. Senior goalkeeper David Cohen relieved him for the final 36:50 and also made two saves to preserve the shutout.

UChicago's five goals were the most the team has scored since a 5-1 win at Aurora on Sept. 9, 2014.
