Chicago Survives St. Olaf 2-1 in Double Overtime

From University of Chicago Athletics

With only one minute left in regulation and the game hanging in the balance, University of Chicago men's soccer player Parker Tikson scored the tying goal to force overtime. The No. 18-ranked Maroons capitalized in the second overtime with a Max Lopez goal to top St. Olaf College 2-1 on Sunday.

The Maroons won their fifth-straight game to open the season, while the Oles fell to 1-4-0.

UChicago controlled the action for the vast majority of the afternoon, but St. Olaf's defense proved impenetrable in the final 20 yards. The visiting defenders converged and plugged passing lanes to keep the Maroons from getting through balls to the front of the goal. The home side pressed the attack continuously but couldn't find a way to finish.

The two sides went into halftime tied 0-0, with UChicago up 5-3 in the shots category. In the second half, St. Olaf struck early with an opportunistic chance at 47:04. After an initial Oles shot was saved, Aaron Stets pounced on a dropped ball at the goal line to put his team up 1-0.

UChicago kept working hard for the equalizer as the minutes dripped away. The Maroons drew a foul with about 80 seconds remaining and earned a free kick on the right side of the field. The ball eventually got loose in the box and senior forward Parker Tikson finished a strike to tie the score in the 89th minute.

The two sides battled into a second overtime where Tikson again came up clutch. The senior dribbled through traffic on the left and his bouncing pass went to freshman midfielder Max Lopez in front for the game-winning tally in the 108th minute.

Senior goalkeeper David Cohen (1-0-0) earned the win with six saves and one goal allowed. He made several important stops on St. Olaf counterattacks late in the contest. UChicago held the edge in shots 20-10 and in corner kicks 7-3.
