Redd Brown Shutout Leads Rochester Past Buffalo St. 1-0

From University of Rochester Athletics

The University of Rochester men's soccer team got a late goal from senior Andrew Greenway and defeated Buffalo State College 1-0 in a non-conference matchup on Tuesday afternoon.

The Yellowjackets (2-2-1) were able to hand the Bengals (4-1-1) their first loss of the season behind a shutout from sophomore Redd Brown, his second of the young season.  Brown was tested, making four saves on 16 shot attempts from Buffalo State, but did not allow a goal.

Rochester's goal came in the 81st minute off a long throw in.  Greenway's header redirected a long throw in from freshman Bryce Ikeda into the lower left corner of the net, past a diving Robby Kuhnle in the Buffalo State net.

After a scoreless first half which saw the Bengals hold a 7-5 shot edge, but Rochester earned the only two corner kicks, the Yellowjackets nearly found a goal early in the second.  Less than five minutes in, a UR header off a corner kick found the back of the net, only to have it disallowed after a Rochester foul in the offensive zone.

The Bengals would counter with the next two scoring chances, coming about a minute apart at 56:55 and 58:03.  The first chance was a hard shot by Bass Sarr headed for the right side of the net, but a sprawling save was made by Rochester's sophomore goalie.  Luke Pavone then added to his shot total shortly after with a ball that went just wide after a short volley to himself.

Late in the contest, Buffalo State tried to find the equalizer.  At 85:02, the Bengals earned their final corner kick of the game, but that chance was broken up when Brown caught the cross before any scoring threat.  Two minutes later, Pavone nearly snuck his shot inside the post from 15 yards out, but the chance sailed wide and out of bounds.

For the game, the Bengals held a 16-9 shot advantage while UR had four corners to Buffalo State's three.  Both keepers made four saves on the day.
