Rochester Picks Up 2-0 UAA Win Over NYU

From University of Rochester Athletics

The University of Rochester men's soccer team used two second half goals from seniors to pick up its first UAA victory of the season, winning 2-0 over NYU on Friday night at Edwin Fauver Stadium.

UR picked up goals from Jeff Fafinski and Andrew Greenway five minutes apart to improve its record to 6-3-5 and 1-1-3 in the UAA.  The loss drops NYU's record to 5-11 and 0-4 in the conference.

Rochester's first goal from Fafinski at 62:37 was a low hard ground ball shot from about 20 yards out in the center of the field, sneaking just inside the right post.  Junior Ben Swanger picked up the assist on the play.

The Yellowjackets then doubled the lead in the 68th minute when Greenway tucked in a shot inside the left post off a high left wing cross from junior Michael Cross.

In the first half, UR's first strong scoring chance came at the 19:07 mark when UR junior Jeff Greblick gained possession after an NYU short goal kick and fired a shot from 30 yards out that just skimmed the top part of the crossbar.

NYU's Bryan Walsh nearly put the Violets on the board in the 25th minute with a header that sailed wide after a cross into the box from the right wing by Ricardo Mitrano.

At the end of the scoreless first half, Rochester held a 5-2 edge in shots.

In the 52nd minute, UR's Fafinski took a corner kick that nearly sneaked underneath the crossbar but was grabbed by NYU goaltender Lucas Doucette before it crossed the goal line.  Three minutes later, Greblick sent a cross into the box looking for senior Andrew Greenway at the right post, but the chance was blocked away by the UR defense.

Greenway then had two excellent opportunities to score at 57:30 off a Rochester corner.  Tyler Buck took the corner kick and sent the ball past the defense on the far side to junior Michael Cross who chipped a pass up to Greenway at the back post.  Greenway then was met by Doucette who made back-to-back great saves to keep the game 0-0.

Overall in the contest, Rochester outshot the Violets 14-7 and earned eight corners to NYU's three.  In the goal, sophomore Redd Brown made one save for UR in the victory while senior Marshal Davidson played the final four minutes in the net and was untested.  Doucette was saddled with the loss after making six stops.
