Big Second Half Leads No. 13 Bears Past Fontbonne 5-0

The No. 13-ranked Washington University in St. Louis men's soccer team broke open a one-goal game at half with four second-half goals as the Bears posted a 5-0 win over Fontbonne University Wednesday night in the Wydown Showdown at Francis Field.

WashU won its third-straight game and improved to 10-2-3, while Fontbonne had its three-game win streak snapped and fell to 6-10.

Junior Kevin Goon scored the lone goal of the first half in the 33rdminute, as he took a quick pass from freshman Marco Pinheiro and fired a shot from 20 yards out to the far corner. The goal for Goon was his third of the season and fifth of his career.

WashU had a 9-2 shot advantage in the first half.

Freshman Ryan Sproule and junior Grant Baltes quickly put the game out of reach with a pair of goals early in the second half. Sproule scored his fifth goal of the season off a corner and a deflection in the 57th minute, and then Baltes netted his third goal of the year with a left-footed shot from inside the box in the 59th minute.

Sophomore Andrew Zingone scored in the 71st minute on a misplay by Fontbonne goalkeeper Jordan Alberici, and then junior Andrew Schmitt rounded out the scoring with a goal in the 85th minute.

Junior goalkeepers Daniel Geanon (63 minutes, one save) and Nick Tannenbaum (27 minutes, one save) combined to record the Bears third-straight shutout. WashU has allowed just two goals in the last eight games.

The Bears outshot Fontbonne 21-6, and had a 7-0 advantage in corner kicks.
