From Washington University Athletics

The Washington University in St. Louis men's soccer team scored a pair of first-half goals en route to a 3-0 victory over Greenville College in the season opener for both teams Tuesday evening at WashU's Francis Field.

Senior Jack West picked up where he left off last year by scoring the Bears' first goal of the season 41 seconds into the game. Junior Grant Baltes played the ball ahead to West, who outran the Greenville defenders and chipped a high, arcing shot that sailed just under the crossbar to give WashU a 1-0 lead.

The Bears maintained the one-goal lead until the 25th minute, when junior Corey Meehan crossed a ball into the box. Sophomore Kevin Maedomari chased it down and fired a shot past the Panthers' keeper to make it 2-0 in favor of the Bears. WashU had several strong chances in the opening minutes of the second half. On the Bears' sixth corner kick of the period, sophomore Andrew Zingone headed in the corner kick from West for the first goal of his career to extend WashU's lead to 3-0.

WashU finished with a 14-6 shot advantage in the game, including a 7-1 advantage in the second half. The Bears also had 14 corner kicks in the game, compared with just two for Greenville. Junior Daniel Geanon (1-0) got the win in goal for the Bears, making three saves in just more than 79 minutes of action. Junior Beau McGinley and sophomore Colin McCune also saw action in goal for WashU.

WashU improved to 1-0 with the win, while Greenville dropped to 0-1. The Bears travel to Wheaton, Ill., for the Bob Baptista Invitational Friday and Saturday. WashU takes on Carthage College at 2 p.m. Friday, before facing No. 2-ranked Wheaton College at 7 p.m. Saturday.
