Four Second-Half Goals Lead Bears Over NYU

From Washington University Athletics

Sophomore Thomas Hutchings scored two goals in the second half to lead the Washington University in St. Louis men's soccer team to a 4-0 win at New York University Friday afternoon at Gaelic Park in Riverdale, N.Y.

WashU improved to 8-2-3 and 1-1-1 in the University Athletic Association (UAA), and moved into third place in the conference standings with four points. New York suffered its third-straight defeat and dropped to 4-9, 0-3 in the UAA.

"I thought we played better on the wings in the second half and it allowed for some scoring chances," said WashU head coach Joe Clarke. "This is a big win for us on the road. We were able to use all of our players and share minutes. Now we have a huge game in front of us on Sunday."

After a scoreless first half, WashU jumped in front 1-0 in the 53rd minute with a penalty kick goal by sophomore Chris Rieger. NYU's Petter Aasa was awarded a red card in the box on the play after a defensive save with his hands.

Hutchings put the game out of reach with two goals in a span of 9:05. He scored in the 66thminute off a rebound shot by junior Corey Meehan, and then added a goal in the 75th minute on an assist by junior forward Andrew Schmitt to make it 3-0.

Freshman Ryan Sproule added an unassisted goal in the 83rd minute to round out the scoring. The goal for Sproule was his third of the season.

Junior goalkeepers Daniel Geanon (82 minutes, one save) and Nick Tannenbaum (eight minutes) combined to post the Bears' sixth shutout of the year.

WashU outshot New York 33-5, and had a 9-3 advantage in corner kicks. The 33 shots taken by WashU was the most since in the Clarke era – a span of 19 years.

WashU closes out a four-game road trip at No. 7-ranked Brandeis University (11-1-1, 2-0 UAA) Sunday, Oct. 18, at 1:30 p.m. (ET).
